HOMies - more than a yoga mat, more like a soul mat(e). Laura Lopez Castro on her adventure of making a sacred business vision come true.

I have been practicing and teaching yoga for many years now, and one thing that has always struck me was a sort of discrepancy between the values of the traditional yoga philosophy and the way many of us practice yoga in modern Western societies. I felt – and keep feeling – that yoga is very much about consciousness: consciousness about ourselves, the environment and everything in it, and our connection to it. And yet, I often felt that there I was, celebrating intimate encounters between my body and mind on toxic mats, mass-fabricated under dubious working conditions in Taiwan, China or Vietnam. I felt that my yoga equipment should be more than just a simple accessory to some random physical exercise. I wanted it to reflect my respect towards my self and the things around me.

I also realized that there were literally no yoga mats with decent, stylish or halfway beautiful designs out there, only cheesy sunsets, cliché mandalas or cheap laser-prints with awfully nasty colors. Instead, I thought, the designs should be handcrafted artworks like symmetrical African print patterns – simple structures, slender signature motives that you might even consider hanging on your wall like a piece of art. All in all, I was imagining yoga mats that would have a much more handcrafted and earthy touch to them, and hence feel a little less like a mass product, and more like an individual and unique companion in my very personal spiritual endeavors. More like a soul mat(e), a tiny piece of home to carry with me.

Those were the feelings and ideas behind hOMies yoga mats. But no matter how good the idea or how strong the desire to materialize it, I did not know where to start and how to afford it without mortgaging a house I didn’t even have. As always in my life, the universe ended up giving me the push I needed. I confided my idea to Diana Schreiber, my tax consultant and dear friend in many years in the music business, and we realized that she was the right person in the right time of her life to make a financial move and help me with the tricky numbers and paragraphs. She believed in my idea, and it was at that very moment when I felt that this idea might actually come to life.

The following weeks we invested in setting up the infrastructure for the high ambitions that came with the feelings and ideas described above, and I am glad to say that it feels much more like winning great friends and extremely gifted people for a joint community project than just contracting business partners. The first three designs will be done by myself, the wonderful soul singer Joy Denalane and the incredible street artist Superblast. Our mats are entirely manufactured in South-Germany, toxic-free, and manually silkscreen printed with eco-friendly colors in Munich by Max Strasser. Our mats are a bit like vinyl records: The designs will be strictly limited to a certain amount of copies, and the manual printing process results in every mat being slightly different from the one before.

Just this week, Joy Denalane, Diana Schreiber and myself officially became business partners and co-founders of our hOMies brand. That makes three powerful women at the forefront of this project, each equipped with the skills to complement the talents of the other two. And all of this made me stick to my original idea of baptizing this project “hOMies”. Because a good yoga mat is more than just a piece of textile, because this brand is a joint effort by a family of people from different artistic and technical backgrounds, and finally, because we are all yoga hOMies, practicing a traditional Asian form of physical and mental exercise and adapting it to our Western lifestyles in modern metropolis.

...and Earthwalking Festival is delighted to feature hOMies! We feel honoured by the trust Laura places in us to be the trial run forum of hOMies. We offer the opportunity to our festival crowd to try a bunch of hOMies prototype mats in practice. Come to the Marketplace in the Eden Foyer and grab one – and be quick about it!

Cosmic Weather Forecast for August and for Earthwalking Festival Weekend

August Lion

Ok people, fasten your seatbelts – August packs a punch!! And that punch is probably both a right-hand swing that smacks you in the face and a Rum Cocktail at a really magic summer party…

Fire action

To sum up, there are three main topics this month. One is love, sweet love… parties… and the chance to get creative and express yourself. Life can feel like a stage this month sometimes – especially in Berlin ;) You walk down the street, meet a friend, there’s a party next door where you stay till 5 in the morning and meet someone really interesting…. You finally get your saxophone out again, or your easel, or you just dance the whole night through… All these are manifestations of a lot of action in Leo, the sign ruled by the sun. For the good part of the month, the sun, Mars, and Venus are all in that splendid fire sign and things really heat up. A lot of our energy is focused on play, love, and creativity. Just watch out for ego-inflation… if that Lion’s pride gets too big it can really poop the party.

Venus reloaded

The second topic is a cosmic caveat. A catch… Some clouds and unexpected rain on the sun, sunshiny day! That big cloud is Venus retrograde all month. The planet of love, relationships, art and values, goes retrograde every one and a half years only, the last time in January 2014. Think back to that time to remember the feeling… Venus in Leo normally is the party-queen-hostess-with-the-mostest, the warm-hearted curvy soul diva, the biggest flirt in town who’s never cheap though. During her retrograde motion however, Venus’ flair is considerably diminished. The party isn’t over, but it’s the moment when you don’t feel so much like dancing anymore. You go to the bathroom to check if your mascara is smeared all over and then you withdraw into a corner with a glass of wine (or water if you’ve had too many of those already…) and assess the evening.

Venus retrograde means that in matters of love and our values and style of relating, we really need to update our program. There will be obstacles, feelings might cool off, priorities change. We have a keen eye on how we are with others, what we want and need, and how well we express our hearts. Old flames and old hurts could resurface. A square from strict disciplinarian Saturn will make matters even more pressing- literally… we can sometimes feel like we’re walking with a heavy burden on our backs, and our hearts… time to come clear then and leave outdated values and relationships behind. The key to this might be for you to pay attention to give yourself value and not demand from others to boost your self-esteem!

Gentlemen prefer… Virgo

The third big trend is that mid-month on August 11th, Jupiter is finishing his year-long stay in Leo and moves into Virgo. Jupiter is the cosmic benefactor and magnifying glass. In Virgo, this means that we get lucky and attract support when we put that big Leo ego aside and look where we can be of service; pay attention to detail; purify our body and mind, develop a daily discipline and generally use discrimination and discernment. Beware of being too critical though… that nagging Virgo perfectionism can really be too much sometimes!

That also goes for any sports or yoga practice that you might expand or take up again this month. Don’t become a fitness junkie but remember to enjoy what you do. Also, don’t get hooked on that image of the perfect body… Virgo is known for an interest in diets also and with Jupiter there, those diets could be taken to extremes to conform to an ideal. But on a different note, Virgo can stoke the holy flame of discipline and care – for yourself as well as to others. When you pay attention to your body, not from outside, but when you agree to feel it and really connect with yourself, you are in tune with that aspect of the sign which is really wonderful. With Jupiter, there will be benefits for your soul and perhaps even your bank account if you do…

Earthwalking Festival Weekend – Fireworks at month’s end :)

The month ends with a full moon on August 29th in early Pisces that turns the magic on big time. That last weekend in August is literally going to be a full-blown cosmic party! Good timeing Festival Team… ;)

The moon is conjunct Neptune and promises a dreamy, visionary, trippy time… compassion and sensitivity with a touch of glamour. That means we’ll all look darn good sweating on those mats, lol! Really, with Pisces that strong, the yoga practice could get you tuned into some higher love and bring a real healing experience.

The sun is in early Virgo conjunct Jupiter giving extra rewards to disciplined practice. With Jupiter up close and personal, you will profit in some way from your efforts. At any rate there should be a generous and fun feel to even the most strenuous asanas… let go of that neck and trust everything’s ok. With this moon I’d say you really can. Just don’t overdo it – that’s the only caution.

Things literally could get very hot as Venus is reaching a conjunction with her lover Mars on September 1st, which is already in effect during the festival weekend as well. They meet in Leo… the sign that rules the heart… fun and games… romantic love… sigh! That’s another reason why putting energy in those positions (ahem) promises to be real fun! With Mars and Venus, Movement/Energy/Sex and Love/Fun together, there will be a lot of energy in the air. Here, too, one small caution: as Pluto interacts with Mars and Venus, things get a boost of considerable depth and additional power. Abstain from trying to control and manipulate yourself or anybody else, or to push the limits. On and off the mat, please!

Path with a Heart

And finally… for some people, the last days of August could be a real life changer. A message, person or information could just really hit home. Why? Mercury is exactly on the lunar north node. The lunar north node symbolizes the best way for our soul to grow in this lifetime. Whatever or whoever comes into our life around the Festival time may well get us aligned with some part of our destiny, some new path we could travel that feels just right for our heart. So enjoy that magic end of a magic month and give it all your fire! On September 6th, Venus will go direct and from mid-October on, those Saturn tests will get considerably lighter, too. If it feels like magic – who knows, perhaps it is!!

Earthwalking - Walk in Beauty

By Uli Meitzner

Sometimes the best in life is free… like walking on the earth. Walking on the mother, with love and respect. Feeling ourselves in the changing seasons of her moods, the clouds, the wind, the little blades of grass and thistles peering up to us from the cracks of a neglected sidewalk…

The earth can inspire us in so many ways. It is always there. It’s our grounding, literally. When we collapse, we fall, and we land on the ground. When we get up, we get up because the earth offers us a stable base for our feet. When we walk with attention, we can notice how at each step, the earth gives us a little boost. Our whole body is designed to take this boost and walk lightly and with ease. The barefoot running movement has shown that it’s possible to run long distances without injuries; there is a tribe in Mexico where people run hundreds of kilometers, with incredible stamina and pleasure! Feeling contact to the ground is a healing and calming experience. Our head gets real when it’s grounded through the feet.

Earth… Terra… Gaia… she’s so often belittled or goes unrecognized. The layer of humus that makes plants grow is “dirt” in our modern eyes. Religion separates our earthly part from our soul, as something less valuable. “Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust…” As if our being in a mortal body somehow diminishes the miracle of life. It actually is that miracle! The earth, the soil, has healing properties.  Contact with the earth boosts the immune system, and there is an energetic as well as microbiotic exchange that is very healthy for humans.  I once read the story of a guy who was a bioengineer working long hours in a lab each day. He was beginning to feel more and more disconnected and depressed. One day when he was walking his dog, he had the unstoppable urge to lie down on the ground and bury his hands and face in the earth, to get his hands dirty with the soil. For the first time in months, he could feel his heart lighten and his lungs work fully again. The contact with the earth literally saved him. He later started his life over based on that experience.

Lost & Found

Through connecting with nature, we start reconnecting to ourselves. We pay attention to our body that the earth sustains in each moment. When we agree to feel whatever is there, whatever sensations, emotions, discomfort or pain, we connect to the earth in ourselves. We are made from her materials, we are like her, material bodies imbued with a divine spark, divine intelligence. We can know without knowing, or having to explain ourselves, the way that children just know. When we find her nourishing power and wisdom inside ourselves, we start to trust and relax, and our inner monologue finally shuts up.

That state though is usually only obtained by a long and concentrated effort to get back down to earth. We have split away from our bodies so long, collectively at least 1500 years, back to the time when Christianity and its hate and mistrust for the femine, the senses and the body took over Europe. And actually, still a few more thousand years before, when the great mother cults were overthrown and the mother that gave life became the monster that had to be tamed and controlled, or the passive soil receiving seeds and cultivation.

What was set up in place of the simple connection of humans with their mother were rules and  abstractions, judgments and punishment, “mind over matter”. There is a story in Greek mythology that tells how we were uprooted – literally. Heracles once had to fight the giant Antaios, son of Gaia and Poseidon, earth and ocean. The giant was invincible as long as he stayed on the ground, because whenever he touched Gaia, his mother, she recharged his powers. Heracles noticed that bond and lifted Antaios high up in the air. There, away from the earth, the giant could be killed, and Heracles strangled him.

Just like this, when we are out of touch with the earth, and our bodies, and go up in the air, in our minds, we feel powerless. When we don’t put our feet on the ground, we become uprooted, an easy prey for the mind, ours and others’. We get confused by doubt, fears, insecurity and negative thoughts. We lose our orientation and the stability to stay on our course. Other people can manipulate and con us, make us feel stupid or involve us in victim games that rob us of our energy. We stay in unhealthy jobs and relationships, and situations that harm our soul.

Earthwalking is a possibility to reconnect to nature, our nature. Doing yoga is one way to come back down to earth, into the earth of our bones, flesh, and skin, if we practice it with attention and if we don’t split away from our feelings and sensations. When we connect with our pain, our heart can heal. Our salty tears can fall on the earth and it’s ok. We can laugh, we can moan or scream. It’s all good. We enter into a space where our stories don’t matter, because we are alive, and we can let the spark of life and awareness spread through our body and soul. In this space we can notice the miracle that no matter what losses, hurts and heartbreaks we’ve had, we’ve never really lost anything. We’re home.

Simple exercises for feeling boosted by the Earth

*** Do a forward bend with relaxed knees and neck. Stand hip wide, put your weight on the balls of your feet. Breathe deeply and stay in this position until your legs begin to shake. Let them shake, and relax. Feel how you can let the tension that was stuck in your legs flow into the ground. Afterwards, notice that your feet and legs have a better connection to the earth.***

*** Feet parallel to each other, lift your heels up a little and fall back on them. Do this until you feel a calming, monotonous rhythm building up, and continue some more. You will feel a boost move upward along your legs, through the pelvis and along the spine. Notice the effect on your head and mind.***

*** Stand with your feet as if you want to make a step forward. Bend your knees, then stretch them. You will feel how you get propelled forward by the ground. Repeat and then walk with that awareness. Move through your day with this.***
